EU inspections of animal transports

The legislation on animal transports was revised at the beginning of 2007. Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations requires each Member State to inspect an adequate number of animal transports every year, in order to control compliance with the animal protection requirements set forth for animal transports. Finland has been conducting EU animal welfare inspections of animal transports since 1997. With more than 3,500 transports inspected between 2000 and 2009 in all, nonconformities with respect to animal protection were detected in an average of 23% of transports.
