Echinococcus Medication No Longer Required of Dogs Arriving Straight from Norway to Finland

27.07.2012 15:11

The import requirements concerning pets changed in January 2012, and a new minor amendment has now been introduced. Medication against tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) is no longer required of dogs arriving straight from Norway to Finland. There are no other changes to pet travel regulations. If a dog is imported to Finland via Sweden or other countries, excluding Norway, Malta, Great Britain and Ireland, it must be medicated against tapeworm.

This new amendment is due to Norway now been officially declared free of Echinococcus multilocularis. Norway informed of its free status in July.

Echinococcus multilocularis is a tapeworm species that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It is not found in Finland. The infection may be mortal for humans. We can maintain Finland’s good status and protect people and animals from this infection by complying with the import regulations and carefully considering the necessity to import pets.
