Import of dogs, cats and ferrets

The purpose of the requirements for the transport of cats, dogs and ferrets is to prevent the spread of animal diseases. The import requirements thus vary according to the animal disease situation in the country of origin.

These requirements must be complied with to prevent the spread of diseases such as rabies. The illegal import of animals and the reselling of illegally imported animals are prohibited.

An illegally imported animal

a) will be returned to the country from which it was imported, or
b) will be quarantined by the authorities at the importer’s expense until it fulfils the relevant health requirements, or
c) will, as a last resort, be terminated, if it cannot be returned or quarantined.

Please find the link EU –legislation on the margin which takes you to the EU Commissions web site concerning legislation of import of animals and animal products from non-EU countries: live animals; semen, ova and embryos; animal products, as well the information about animal diseases, identification and animal welfare.
