Birds
The import of birds is possible only with an import licence from the Animal Health and Welfare Unit of the Organisation of Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira and complying with the conditions in the licence. The licence is liable to charge (91 euros). The import licence has to be applied for well in advance of the intended import.
All applications will be handled on a case-by-case basis and the license may also not be granted due to the animal disease situation. The conditions of the import licence are determined by the animal disease situation of the country of origin. The conditions for bringing pet birds from EU countries consist of for example individual identification (closed leg ring or microchip) and a veterinary examination both prior to and after the import. When bringing birds from outside the Nordic countries, it is also required that an examination for Newcastle disease and avian influenza be carried out. Birds are not to be imported from areas that are restricted due to disease.
When importing rare or otherwise endangered animals, such as snakes, tortoises or parrots the so-called CITES convention also has to be taken into consideration. CITES is a multilateral agreement on the international trade in endangered animals and plants, which requires export and import licences or an import declaration for certain animal species.
