Statistics about the quality of the grain crop
The Grain Section of the Plant Analysis Unit has studied the quality of the domestic grain crop since 1966. The purpose of the quality study is to establish the grain’s working quality and to report on it as quickly as possible after the start of the harvest. Quality information helps to direct the use of grain to the correct targets and to improve the competitiveness of Finnish grain.
The quality study is based an analysis of samples sent by farmers, so the study gives a good overall picture of the quality of the grain crop as it is when it goes from the farm to the market. Farms are selected by area using sampling taken from the Rural Business Register kept by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Information Service Centre. The number of farms taking part in the study averages 1,500.
From the farmers' samples, the quality factors that affect the working value of bread- and feed grain in general use in the grain trade and in industry are defined.
The results of the quality monitoring are published in the annual 'Viljaseula' publication
