Control of plant diseases and plant pests

Supervision to prevent the occurrence of quarantine pests and diseases is carried out through inspections conducted at farms, shops and of imports and exports. Quarantine and diseases pests can occur in greenhouses, fruit and berry farms, nurseries and potato farms. It is particularly vital that the production of seedlings and other plant propagation material is free of harmful plant diseases and pests.

Forests are monitored for occurrences of the pine wood nematode, a harmful forest pest. In sawmill, wood and timber production, compliance with export requirements, such as the international ISPM 15 standard, is supervised.

Inspections are carried out by inspectors from Evira and ELY-centres, and inspectors authorised by Evira. Inspection activities are controlled by Evira’s plant health unit.
