Virological research

The Veterinary Virology Research Unit is responsible for scientific research related to the viral and prion diseases of animals, the diagnostics of viral and prion diseases, the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the related expertise, and the batch release of animal vaccines and the advice and scientific research related to the use of animal vaccines. The unit participates in the investigation of animal disease epidemics and the prevention of animal diseases and animal health risks. The main process of virology also serves as the national EU reference laboratory for viral animal diseases to be combated.

Poultry and Fish Virology

The sub-process for poultry and fish virology is responsible for the diagnostics and related scientific research of the viral diseases of poultry and birds, fish and amphibians, horses, dogs, cats and fur animals. The sub-process also serves as the national EU reference laboratory for the viral animal diseases to be combated in the aforementioned animal species, including avian influenza, Newcastle disease, rabies, equine infectious anaemia and viral diseases of fish (including viral hemorrhagic septicemia VHS).

Biungulate Animal Virology

The sub-process of biungulate animal virology is responsible for the diagnostics of the viral and prion diseases of swine,
bovine animals, sheep, goats and other ruminants and the related scientific research. The sub-process also serves as the national EU reference laboratory for prion diseases and the viral animal diseases to be combated in ruminants and swine, including BSE, scrapie and other TSE diseases, foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, African swine fever and classical swine fever.
