EU approval for the genetically modified maize MON89034 has been sought for all food and feed uses, for importing and processing but not for cultivation. The genetically modified maize has been developed in order to resist certain lepidopteran pests.

The European Commission makes its draft decision about allowing the GM maize onto the market in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council on genetically modified food and feed, taking into consideration, amongst other things, the opinion of EFSA and the comments from the public.
