Evira arranges first Russia/Customs Union export seminar

21.9.2011

On Thursday 15 September 2011, the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira arranged a seminar on export operations to the Customs Union territory of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The seminar addressed the export of animal-based foods and feeds.

The seminar, which included presentations from Russian officials, was the first large-scale event arranged by a central administrative authority of an EU member state for both exporters and authorities.

In addition to food safety authorities (provincial veterinary officers of the Regional State Administrative Agencies, municipal food safety authorities, state veterinary inspectors), the seminar attracted operators (animal-based foodstuffs, animal- and plant-based feeds, live animals etc.) who perform export activities (e.g. manufacture, storage etc.) directed at Russia or the Customs Union territory.

In addition to requirements and policies introduced by the CU, export conditions were addressed during the seminar day. Jaana Husu-Kallio, Director General of Evira, reported on official cooperation and the importance of abiding by the buyer country’s requirements. In his address to the ministry, Matti Aho, Director General at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, emphasised cooperation between operators and authorities. In his lecture, Kyösti Siponen, Head of Import, Export and Organic Control Unit, Evira, concentrated on the requirements of the CU and Evira’s role in controlling exports. Heikki Juutinen, Managing Director, Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation, addressed the importance to the food and drink industry of exports.

In their presentations, the representatives of Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, Rosselhoznadzor, covered issues on regulatory documents related to CU veterinary surveillance, CU safety requirements and inspection procedures targeted at production institutions and exporters in third countries. In addition, the seminar addressed the export of animal-based products from Finland into the territory of the Customs Union, special features of CU legislation requirements and control-related policies.
