Evira’s Research Director Liisa Sihvonen has been appointed by invitation as part-time Professor of Veterinary Virology at the University of Helsinki as from 1.4.2009

<div>The position to be held by DVM Liisa Sihvonen is a joint professorship between Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Helsinki. As from the beginning of April, DVM Liisa Sihvonen will function both as Research Director for Evira (70 % of the time) and as Professor of Veterinary Virology at the University of Helsinki (30 % of the time). </div>

Since 1995 Liisa Sihvonen has functioned as Director of the Veterinary Virology Research Unit of Evira (previously EELA) and since 2008 as Evira's Research Director. Previously Liisa Sihvonen has been in charge of the diagnostics and epidemiology of animal viral and prion diseases and expertise in animal vaccines. She has been directing virology research both at the Evira virology research unit and in co-operation with universities and other research institutes.

Liisa Sihvonen has gained international experience in scientific research and in the field of animal viral and prion diseases and expertise in animal vaccines. She has spent long periods abroad in the United States, Iceland and England specialising and carrying out collaborative research. She has been a member of two scientific committees of the EU and also of several scientific work groups.
