Hygiene proficiency examiner sentenced by Helsinki District Court


<div>A hygiene proficiency examiner was sentenced to fines for abuse of office by a decision of the District Court of Helsinki passed on 20 September 2006. The examiner was also ordered to forfeit to the state the gain derived from criminal conduct. The hygiene proficiency examiner had granted proficiency certificates meritlessly against payment. Another proficiency examiner has previously been sentenced for gross abuse of office to five months of suspended imprisonment. </div>

A hygiene proficiency certificate is required of everybody whose work in a food establishment involves handling of unpacked perishable foodstuffs. The Finnish Food Safety Authority appoints as hygiene proficiency examiners persons that have demonstrated having the required competence and skills. The examiners have the right to charge a fee from people who take the examination and also a fee for the hygiene proficiency certificate. The fees shall not exceed the true costs incurred by the examiner.
