Matti Aho starts as Director General of Evira
Matti Aho began work today as Director General of the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira. Mr. Aho has been appointed for a fixed term, from 1 May 2012 to 30 April 2019. He is joining Evira from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, where he has spent that last ten years as a Head of Department and as Finland’s Chief Veterinary Officer.
Aho feels enthusiastic and upbeat about his new position.
“Evira plays a key role in ensuring food safety, but the authorities cannot do this alone. I think it is extremely important that our customers and stakeholders understand our objectives and are prepared to work with us to help achieve them. Dialogue with consumers and citizens will be one of my challenging duties; we enjoy a great deal of trust, but must continue to earn it”, Aho says, contemplating his role as Director General.
The Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira is responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of foodstuffs, as well as the health and welfare of animals and plants. Evira has nine regional offices across Finland. In addition, it has meat inspectors working in slaughterhouses in sixteen locations. Evira has around 700 employees in total.
