New safety assessment for aspartame completed

<div>The European Food Safety Authority EFSA published on Friday a statement on the carcinogenicity of aspartame, based on an assessment of the report on the carcinogenic effects of aspartame published in July 2005 by the Italian Ramazzini Institute after long-term research.</div>

The conclusion made in EFSA's assessment is that at this point there is no need to carry out a more extensive re-assessment of aspartame. EFSA is also of the opinion that the available research material does not constitute grounds to change the Acceptable Daily Intake, or ADI, defined for aspartame in previous assessments. EFSA also states that the study under review did not present any scientific reason for a re-assessment of the use of aspartame in foodstuffs.
