Nutmeg powder used as such is harmful for health

14.4.2009

<div>There has been information in the media about a case where nutmeg powder intended to be used as a spice had been used against instructions for intoxicating purposes with serious consequences.</div>

Nutmeg is used as a spice in e.g. cakes, ginger biscuits and casseroles. If used correctly, it is not harmful for health.

Abuse was informed to the authorities as early as in the beginning of the 1990’s when several young people who had consumed nutmeg were hospitalised for poisoning symptoms. The authorities then intervened in the selling of whole nutmeg and recommended that the spice be only sold as powder and packages marked with "Only for spice use. Harmful for health if consumed as such”.

If food products are deliberately used ignoring the instructions given, the responsibility lies with the consumer.
