Online search service from Register of Veterinary Surgeons opened on 1 July 2011

Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira opened on 1 July 2011 a public information service on the Register of Veterinary Surgeons. The service provides basic information on all practitioners of veterinary medicine in Finland. The online search service only works in Finnish. It is based on the Register of Veterinary Surgeons, which is maintained by Evira and part of the national veterinary information system Elite. At present data on some 2200 practitioners of veterinary medicine are stored in Elite. Data are updated on real time from Elite, but they cannot be modified through the public information system.

The information service can be accessed from Evira's Finnish web site at > Evira > Asiointi > Sähköinen asiointi > Yleiset > Eläinlääkärirekisterin tietopalvelu. A Swedish version of the service will be opened in the autumn of 2011.

The public search service from the Register of Veterinary Surgeons can be used to verify that the person is approved to practice as a veterinarian in Finland. Previously this could only be done by telephoning Evira, but the online service can be used also outside office hours. Approved practitioners of veterinary medicine in Finland include licensed veterinarians, as well as students of veterinary medicine with temporary approval.

The search produces the name and the identification number of the person, as well as information on the date of licensing or the duration of temporary practitioner approval (e.g. Mary Smith, date of licensing 15.1.2010 or John Jones, temporary approval to practice veterinary medicine 2.1.2009 - 2.1.2012). Any restrictions in the approval of the person to practice veterinary medicine are also shown in the search result. More detailed information about the restrictions can be requested from Evira over the telephone.

The information service does not provide address or workplace data. If the person has been completely struck off the register, the search will produce no data.

Information can only be searched from the public online information service of the Register of Veterinary Surgeons on one person at a time. The search word has to be the person's name or identification number. The identification number is a four-digit number that Evira issues to each practitioner of veterinary medicine. More detailed instructions for the use of the search service can be found on the site.
