Organic products are controlled production
The organic products on the market fulfil the requirements of organic production. Possible breaches of regulations are discovered by the controls even before the products reach the market. Therefore the consumers can buy organic products without concern. The results of the organic production controls are set out in the control report on organic production by the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira. The report can be found on Evira’s internet pages.
The most reasons that have led to marketing bans in the control of agricultural production have been related to the use of propagating material and animal feeding. Based on the number of remarks, the book-keeping related to organic production causes most of the headaches for the organic producers. The inadequate book-keeping led to two cases of marketing ban. The book-keeping and the traceability of the products are an essential part of the credibility of organic products.
Based on the results of the controls in 2008, there are some disparities as to the organic controls in different parts of the country. The reason for this is the differences both between the inspectors carrying out the controls and between the TE-centres making decisions. Therefore the main focus is now on harmonising the control procedures as to improve the control nationally. This is to be brought about by developing the quality of the training and by auditing.
From the organic producers’ point of view, the biggest problem is the delays in the decision making process. All of the decisions could not be made at the TE-centres within the 60 days as required by the relevant national regulation.
Evira is in charge of the controls of organic production in Finland. In 2008, nearly 3 800 farms were covered by the controls, of which over 500 also have animals in organic production. 400 food operators and 16 feed operators were covered by the controls.
