Riitta Maijala appointed Head of the Risk Assessment Department of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
The activities of EFSA's scientific panels are the responsibility of the Risk Assessment Department. The scientific panels deal with questions concerning, among other things, the additives in food and feed, materials in contact with food, the microbiological hazards of and contaminants in foods, dietetic products, genetically modified organisms, plant protection products (commonly known as pesticides), plant health and questions pertaining to animal health and wellbeing. The department has a staff of approximately 80 people.
Maijala is Head of the Animal Health and Welfare Unit of the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira. Previously she has, among other things, held a position at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Helsinki University and been Head of the National Veterinary and Food Research Institute Risk Assessment Unit. She has also functioned as deputy chairperson of EFSA’s scientific panel on biological hazards.
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) provides independent scientific risk assessment on all issues that directly or indirectly affect food safety, including animal health and plant protection. EFSA is also consulted for advice on nutritional matters related to Community legislation. EFSA informs the public openly about all of the issues pertaining to their sphere of responsibility.
