Up-to-date information on veterinarians from the information service and catalogue

The Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira licenses veterinarians in Finland. Evira also grants students of veterinary science temporary licenses to practice as veterinarian (Act on practising veterinary medicine 29/2000). In order to manage the supervisory obligations provided under law, Evira publishes a catalogue of veterinarinas. The latest issue, Eläinlääkärit 2011, has been published. Information on veterinarians is also available via Evira’s real-time public information service.

The catalogue on veterinarians (only in Finnish) contains information on almost 2,200 licensed veterinarians in Finland, and slightly over one hundred students of veterinary science holding temporary licenses to practice as veterinarian.

Continuously updated information
Veterinarians having completed their studies in Finland and abroad are licensed on a regular basis. In 2010, 69 veterinarians who had graduated from the University of Helsinki, and 27 who had studied abroad, were licensed. Of those who had studied abroad, the vast majority, 15 veterinarians, had completed their studies in Estonia, at the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu. During the first ten months of 2011, a total of 68 veterinarinarians were licensed. Of these, 34 graduated outside Finland.

The number and contact information of veterinarians change constantly. Information on veterinarians and students licensed to practice as veterinarian, alongside the latest update, is available on a continuous basis through the public information service on Evira’s website Evira > Asiointi > Sähköinen asiointi > Yleiset > Eläinlääkärirekisterin tietopalvelu (in Finnish). Information via the public information service, introduced in the summer 2011, is updated on real time. It is therefore more up-to-date than information in the catalogue, published once a year.

The catalogue Eläinlääkärit 2011 is available for a charge through Evira’s website Evira > Julkaisut

The catalogue is distributed to all pharmacies in Finland, Regional State Administrative Agencies and pharmaceutical wholesalers.
