Seminar: Risk assessment for the wellbeing of people, animals and plants

Welcome to an international seminar to learn and discuss about studies of scientific risk assessment by Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, and about the future of risk assessment.

The morning part of the seminar is in English. It consists of presentations of the current projects of Evira's Risk Assessment Research Unit as well as the risk ranking project under development by Evira and National food Agency, Sweden (Livsmedelsverket). The seminar also includes a presentation on the collaboration between Finland and EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority).

The afternoon part of the seminar is in Finnish. The topics include the opportunities offered by new technology for real-time risk assessment, and how new research data are tied to decision-making.

Risk assessment seminar is part of Evira's 10th anniversary celebrations

The occasion will be honoured by the presence of Dr. Bernhard Url, the Executive Director of the EFSA. His visit to Finland is part of a wider tour to EU Member States.

The seminar also marks the 15th anniversary of risk assessment at Evira.

"For Evira, scientific risk assessment started in the National Veterinary and Food Research Institute EELA, which was merged with the newly founded Evira a little over ten years ago. Risk assessment ties well in with Evira's activities, since the objective of risk assessment can be defined as the good health and wellbeing of people, animals and plants. These, on the other hand, are linked to Evira's goals of being an active, knowledgeable and acknowledged participant, on both national and international level, in the current social debate on risks in the food sector", says Pirkko Tuominen, Head of Evira's Risk Assessment Research Unit, DVM (PhD).

The seminar will be held on Tuesday, 11 October 2016, from 08.30 until 16.20 in the House of the Estates (Säätytalo), address 9 - 11 Snellmaninkatu, Helsinki.

The knowledge of the production chains, in terms of both plant and animal health and food safety, plays a key role in risk assessment. To support risk assessment, information is needed about e.g. production methods and structures, risk factors, food use data and food consumption patterns, as well as various risk management methods and the effectiveness of the methods.
